The chivalric novel 'Huge Scheppel'

The novel 'Huge Scheppel' is set in the late 10th century and narrates the legend of Hugo Capet, a knight who rises to become king through courage, loyalty, love and ordeals. This is one of the four chansons de geste translated by Elisabeth of Lorraine. These French works thus became available to a wider public, whilst Elisabeth herself became a pioneer of the German prose novel. The illustrations on display here originate from an illustrated manuscript dating back to the 15th century.
