Red Tower
Who lived in a castle?
A castle was home not only to the lord of the castle and his family, but also to many other people. Servants took care of the household, supplies and animals. Cooks prepared meals. Burgmannen (castle guards) were armed men who defended the castle. Craftsmen repaired buildings and equipment as needed. Sometimes clergymen worked at the castle, too, and looked after the chapel. The burgvogt (keeper), or administrator, made sure that everything was well organized.
The castle was not only a place to live and work, but also where the lord made important decisions.
