The significance of the furrows in the ground is not known today. They may have served to anchor a wooden crane with the aid of which workers moved stones, but they could also be traces of a quarry. When the moat was being built, stones were broken out of the bedrock and used in the building of the castle and the fortress. The bedrock can still be seen as the foundation of the walls.
