This two-storey casemate was built between 1563 and 1569 as part of the bastion's defence system. When defence became necessary, soldiers could fire on attackers who had advanced as far as the moat using heavy arquebuses. The ventilation shafts above the embrasures were necessary, because they enabled the smoke from the gunpowder weapons to escape.
